CUSTODIAN / LANDSCAPER

Reporting to the Manager Facility and Program Operations, this position is responsible for ensuring that the recreational rental space within the NECCS component of the Genesis Centre as well as the office space is cleaned and maintained. The Custodian will also perform a variety of hands on work such as equipment set up and take down, minor repairs, posting signage and acting as a first responder. The position also includes maintenance of the exterior landscaping of the facility. Details (PDF)

Our Board Members

Sharon Evens President & Soccer Rep
Sharon was born and raised in Alberta. She is a graduate of the University of Calgary with an Electrical Engineering and Master of Business Administration degree. With over twenty years of experience working for companies in a variety of roles, her last was as Project Quality Manager at AltaLink in Calgary. Having been blessed with four children that were all active in variety of sports throughout their lives; she got involved in the soccer community at the club level and took a keen interest on how to support coaches from a club level. She moved organizations to support infrastructure of indoor and outdoor facilities for soccer at a municipal level. After a few years, she took on the role at the provincial level to support administration of leagues for elite young and senior soccer players to get to the national level. Throughout her years on various boards, she has gained an understanding of the needed infrastructure support for recreational and competitive athletes, which includes players, officials, administrators, long term athlete philosophy and facilities.

Bilal Akhtar Vice President & Treasurer
M Bilal Akhtar was born in 1986. When he first arrived in Canada with his family in 2000, he learnt how important it was for him to learn French language in order for him to succeed in his school and future career while living in Quebec. While taking the challenge of a new language along with five other languages: Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Arabic and English; he also successfully completed his diploma of college studies in Pure Applied Sciences at Vanier College in Montreal. He is currently in his fourth year working towards getting a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Accounting at the University of Calgary. After completing the degree his short-term goal is to pursue a Chartered Accountant (CA) designation.

Sue Clark Secretary & Saddle Ridge Rep
Susan brings a passion for the community and serving its’ needs. Having lived in different areas of the country and abroad she has found that although different in looks, language and religion, people as a whole want the same thing, to belong. As current President of the Saddle Ridge Community Association, and having lived in the community for over 17 years, Susan has an insight into the community and works hard to bring the Northeast together as one team. Susan is currently a member of the Diversity Council and is the Saddle Ridge representative on the Genesis Board.

Syed Hussain Director-at-Large
With a Bachelor’s from Concordia University, Montreal and a strong business acumen, Syed Hussain has a passion to inspire change. He is employed with Air Canada as a Key Account Manager in Global Sales and is a proud founding member of GenYYC which is a new leadership development program designed through a collaborative partnership between the Calgary Chamber and the Calgary Foundation to support and encourage emerging young leaders in the city to build great leaders, great organizations and a great community. He is also the owner of Catalytic Arts which produces the most thrilling shows showcasing local emerging artists in the best of entertainment today while supporting different charities. Syed has travelled the world and has an inspired vision of the future. His experiences in life have been varied and dynamic, built on the principles of commitment, integrity and results.

Greg Steiner Director-at-Large
Greg is credited with the original vision for a recreational leisure centre on behalf of the northeast residents above McKnight Blvd. For 15 years he has worked tirelessly from the initial planning stages to the final opening of the new Genesis Centre of Community Wellness. Having served on the design, construction, and fund development committees, he continues to work towards accomplishing the overall vision and mandate of the Northeast Centre of Community Society (NECCS), of which he is a founding member. Having lived in Saddle Ridge for over 32 years, Greg has served in various executive capacities for Saddle Ridge Community Association, a founding partner of NECCS.

Jason Klink Director-at-Large
Jason comes from a background in science (MSc) but has worked the last 15 years international and community development. He has been at United Way since 2011 funding and working alongside community groups and non profit agencies. His individual passion is very similar to his work and his involvement at Genesis is through work, volunteering, and using it with his own family as a Taradale resident. He also spends spare time as a very unsuccessful amateur fisherman.

Vikram Kulkarni Director-at-Large
Originally from Mumbai India, Vik Kulkarni moved to Canada in 2003 after completing a contractual obligation at the School of Combat Engineers (SOCE) with the Singapore Armed forces (SAF). His educational credentials include a diploma in Criminology, degree in English and a Masters degree in Human Security and Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC.

Gurvir Johal Director-at-Large
Gurvir graduated from Mount Royal University with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree with a major in Accounting in 2011. She received his CMA/CPA designation in 2014. Born and raisied in the Northeast Calgary, she is a strong believer in giving back to the community.

Sherry King Executive Director
Sherry joined the Genesis Centre team in 2011 prior to the completion of the Genesis Centre. Prior to that she was a key volunteer with the NECCS Board of Directors “Completing the Dream Together” Capital Campaign with one of her fondest memories being the ground breaking ceremony of the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness shared with her middle son. Sherry has lived, worked and been heavily involved in North East Calgary her entire life. She strongly believes in giving back and the need for strong communities. She is a busy mother of 3 boys who enjoys getting out and being active especially with Geocaching, camping and hiking.

Nadeem Khan Finance & HR Manager
Nadeem is a dedicated professional in the admin and HR field. He carries a Bachelors in Business Administration and is currently working with the City of Calgary as the Leader of Administration & Finance. With that he is responsible for an $80 million operational budget and leading a staff of over 500 in a unionized 24/7 multifaceted field environment. Nadeem has been a passionate volunteer for over 20 years. He enjoys camping and hiking and the wonderful fresh mountain air.

Jonah Ardiel Business Development Manager
From a young age, Jonah has had a keen eye for organizational development and community service. Having graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce (concentration, Marketing), Jonah has supplemented his education in a variety of community-based roles. This reached a pinnacle in 2017 when he represented Genesis Centre as its Canada 150 Coordinator. It was in this role that Jonah reaffirmed his commitment to community service while also developing a deep appreciation for the Genesis Centre’s diverse range of stakeholders. In addition to this experience, Jonah brings expertise in the field of communications, organizational strategy, program coordination, and a broad knowledge of not-for-profits and charities across Calgary. Recreationally, Jonah is an avid runner, having completed numerous marathons, budding short fiction writer, dedicated book worm, and passionate cinephile.

Doug Taggart Building Operations Manager
Doug joined the Genesis team in April 2015. He provides leadership and operational experience to the Building Operations and Custodial department.He has 30 years of operational experience while working for the City of Calgary Recreation department. He operated Arenas and Athletic parks such as the Max Bell Centre and Shouldice Arena / Athletic park.

Krista Frayn Active Living & Events Manager
Krista joined the Genesis Centre team in 2012 as the Special Events Coordinator. Krista handles all aspects of Special Events within The Genesis Centre from inquires and bookings to logistics and event coordination. Krista has been in the events industry for over 5 years and is an International Event and Wedding Planning Professional (IEWPP).

Stephen Osondu Guest Services Manager
Stephen Osondu is a Duty Manager in the Genesis Centre team and comes with wealth of experience haven worked in the hospitality industry for years. Among his qualifications include a master degree in business management from Dublin City University. In 2013, Stephen decided it was time for a change of scenery and relocated with his family from Ireland to Canada where they are currently making a new home. When Stephen is not working hard at Genesis Centre, he is at home playing with his daughter Makayla.

Kanwar Pannu Guest Services Supervisor
Kanwar joined the Genesis Centre team in 2014 as a Facility Attendant. He has a Masters Degree in Physical Education and began working as a Physical Education Teacher/Lecturer in 4 different institutions in India before moving to Canada in 2013.

Essmaa Kachour Events Coordinator
Essmaa joined the team as a facility attendant in 2016, since then she has moved into a the role as a Booking & Financial Coordinator. Prior to working at the Genesis Centre Essmaa completed her diploma in Baking & Pastry Arts. Yes, she can make a delicious & beautiful cake! Essmaa is here to help make sure your birthday parties, AGM’s and community meetings are successful.

Marlee Higginson Active Living Coordinator
Marlee joined the Genesis Centre team in May 2018 and is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to both existing and prospective sport, special event and other facility user groups. In 2014, she graduated from Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor Degree in Tourism and Recreation Management. She brings experience working in various positions with aquatics, recreation and events.

Family Pass Fee Subsidy
Families who qualify for the City of Calgary Fair Entry program are also eligible to receive a subsidized Genesis Centre Family Pass. This is 50% off the regular annual rate. Our Fee Subsidy program is designed to help families create lasting memories by getting more active more often. Individual passes do no apply. Those wishing to make use of this program must first acquire a “Fair Entry” approval letter from the City. This can be found on the City of Calgary website here.
