Transit Improvements: Construction on 52 Street starts this summer
The City of Calgary is completing plans to improve Transit service along 52 Street between the communities of Saddletowne and Seton this year. The 52 Street Transit Improvements project will benefit the current Route 23 and BRT Route 302, and also build important enhancements for a future Transit MAX line that will run along 52 Street.
The planned improvements give buses priority travel along 52 Street, which means fewer delays to Transit Riders, and will also include some intersection improvements, and pedestrian enhancements along 52 Street. The proposed design does not include removing any vehicle lanes to accommodate the improvements for Transit.
What transit improvements are planned for 52 Street?
There are 10 intersections where The City will be making improvements for transit along 52 Street, which include bus queue jump lanes, bus only lanes, and transit signal priority. Bus queue jumps are lanes reserved for buses at signalized intersections. Buses enter their own lane and get an advanced green light before other vehicles at the intersection, allowing them to get ahead of traffic and avoid congestion delays.
Other improvements include widening 52 Street between 126 Avenue and 130 Avenue S.E, improving some existing pathway connections, as well as building a new pathway on the west side of 52 Street between 26 Avenue and Rundlehorn Drive N.E.
The 10 intersections along 52 Street that will be upgraded include:
Intersections in the Northeast
- 26 Avenue N.E.
- 23 Avenue N.E.
- Rundlehorn Drive N.E.
- Madigan Drive N.E.
- Marlborough Drive N.E.
- 4 Avenue N.E.
- Memorial Drive N.E.
Intersections in the Southeast
- 126 Avenue S.E.
- 130 Avenue S.E.
- Auburn Bay Drive S.E.

What will happen next?
The designs for the improvements are complete, and have been tendered for construction. We anticipate construction will start in June and be complete by December 2021.
Are there any property impacts?
Almost all of the work we will be doing this year is within the city-owned road right of way. The City is working with some property owners on improving driveway access, and will also work with residents and property owners during construction to minimize any disruptions as much as possible.
What can you expect during construction?
52 Street will remain open during construction, however there will be intermittent and temporary lane closures and detours in place while crews are working. To stay up to date with when, and where, crews are working please sign up for updates at calgary.ca/52streettransit.
