Reimagined Traditions by Saloni Sharma Featured at Genesis Centre
Visitors to Genesis Centre can now experience Reimagined Traditions, a vibrant new exhibition by Calgary-based multidisciplinary visual artist and interior designer Saloni Sharma, on display through the Northeast Mini Galleries Public Art Program.

Originally from India and now based in Calgary, Saloni’s artistic practice is rooted in a deep appreciation for cultural heritage, sustainable creativity, and handcrafted traditions. Her work combines traditional Indian folk-art influences with contemporary artistic techniques, creating pieces that celebrate storytelling, craftsmanship, and cultural memory.
What makes this exhibition particularly unique is Saloni’s choice of canvas. Rather than working on traditional surfaces, she transforms handmade paper pulp plates into colourful works of art, giving new life to recycled materials while demonstrating how everyday objects can become meaningful artistic expressions.
“Reimagined Traditions explores the intersection of cultural memory, handmade practice and contemporary sustainability.”

Through intricate patterns, vibrant colours, and familiar cultural motifs, each piece invites viewers to reflect on the connections between heritage and modern life.

The exhibition features a collection of Saloni Sharma’s hand-painted works, inspired by folk-art traditions and featuring depictions of animals, nature, and symbolic imagery. Together, they create a visual dialogue between past and present while highlighting the enduring value of handmade artistic practices.
The Northeast Mini Galleries Public Art Program places mini galleries in community spaces across northeast Calgary, including Genesis Centre, to make public art more visible and accessible in the neighbourhoods where people gather. The program features local artists throughout the year, with exhibitions selected by local curators and displayed for four-month periods.
Launched in 2023 as part of the City of Calgary’s Northeast Public Art Initiative, the program supports local artists, enhances northeast communities, and reflects the people, cultures, and stories that shape this part of the city. By hosting a mini gallery, Genesis Centre helps connect visitors with Calgary’s public art community while continuing to serve as a welcoming hub for creativity, culture, and community connection.

We encourage all visitors to take a few moments during their next visit to Genesis Centre to explore Reimagined Traditions and discover the stories, traditions, and creativity behind each piece.
