Sherry King Executive Director
Sherry joined the Genesis Centre team in 2011 prior to the completion of the Genesis Centre. Prior to that she was a key volunteer with the NECCS Board of Directors “Completing the Dream Together” Capital Campaign with one of her fondest memories being the ground-breaking ceremony of the Genesis Centre of Community Wellness shared with her middle son. Sherry has lived, worked and been heavily involved in North East Calgary her entire life. She strongly believes in giving back and the need for strong communities. She is a busy mother of 3 boys who enjoys getting out and being active especially with Geocaching, camping and hiking.
Nadeem Khan Finance & HR Manager
Nadeem is a dedicated professional in the fields of Finance, admin and HR. He carries a degree in business administration. Before joining the Genesis administration team, he was on the Board and was member of Audit & Finance Committee for over six years. After moving to Canada in 2008, he worked for almost nine years with the City of Calgary in the fields of general administration, HR and Finance. Nadeem has been a passionate volunteer for over 30 years. He enjoys camping and hiking and the wonderful fresh mountain air.
Jonah Ardiel Business Development Manager
Jonah first joined the Genesis Centre in 2017, as the organization’s Canada 150 Coordinator, wherein he developed a year-long of programming under the federal Canada 150 program. Following this, he joined the organization’s Board of Directors and sat as a member of the Sustainability & Stakeholders’ Relations Committee. Jonah brings expertise in the field of marketing and communications, organizational strategy, program coordination, and a broad knowledge of not-for-profits and charities across Calgary. Recreationally, Jonah is a short fiction writer, avid runner, cinephile, and enjoys spending time in the nearby Rocky Mountains as much as possible.
Doug Taggart Building Operations Manager
Doug joined the Genesis team in April 2015. He provides leadership and operational experience to the Building Operations and Custodial department. He has 30 years of operational experience while working for the City of Calgary Recreation department. He operated Arenas and Athletic parks such as the Max Bell Centre and Shouldice Arena / Athletic park.
Stephen Osondu Guest Services Manager
Stephen joined the Genesis team in 2013 as a Duty Manager. In his current role as Guest Services Manager, he leads, provides strategic direction for and is responsible for Guest Services operations. Prior to Genesis Centre, Stephen worked in the hospitality industry for 4 years. Among his qualifications include a Master’s degree in Business Management from Dublin City University. In 2013, Stephen decided it was time for a change of scenery and relocated with his family from Ireland to Canada, where they have since made their home. When Stephen is not at work, he is spending quality time with his children.
Kohe Tom Active Living & Events Manager
Kohe joined the Genesis Centre in July 2014. She Graduated from Mount Royal University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepreneurship – Sport and Recreation degree. Previously Kohe worked in Portland Oregon for the city programming their city parks with movies, concerts and kids day camps.
Kanwar Pannu Guest Services Supervisor
Kanwar joined the Genesis Centre team in 2014 as a Facility Attendant. He has a Masters Degree in Physical Education and began working as a Physical Education Teacher/Lecturer in 4 different institutions in India before moving to Canada in 2013.
Dwayne Collins Guest Services Supervisor
Dwayne joined the Genesis Centre in January 2019. He holds degrees in Business Administration, Management Studies, and Health & Physical Education. Previously, he was an Event Coordinator at Mount Royal University. Before moving to Canada, in his native country of Jamaica, he was a firefighter and member of the Caribbean search and rescue team. Outside of work, he is passionate about family and bodybuilding.
Essmaa Kachour Events Coordinator
Essmaa has worn many hats with the Genesis Centre. Beginning in 2016 as a Facility Attendant, she’s also held the position of Bookings & Financial Coordinator, before moving into her current role as the organization’s Events Coordinator. In this position, Essmaa facilitates the booking process for clients including concerts, birthday parties, community programming, and much more. Beyond her passion for the Genesis Centre, Essmaa also holds a Baking & Pastry Arts diploma from SAIT Polytechnic.
Dana MacCallum Active Living Coordinator
Dana joined the Genesis Centre in July 2014. As the Active Living Coordinator, she is responsible for managing all reoccurring bookings along with tournaments and summer camps. She also recently added marketing to her portfolio, as it pertains to active living and events. Dana holds a Bachelor of Applied Business and Entrepreneurship – Sport and Recreation degree from Mount Royal University and has previously worked for professional sport teams and the Calgary International Film Festival.
Mandana Chowdhury Events Coordinator
Mandana joined the Genesis Centre team in September 2014. She is responsible for coordinating special events at the Centre – whether it be a birthday party, concert, or a wedding, she is here to make sure your event is successful!
Mohammad Zahed HR & Finance Coordinator
Mohammad joined the Genesis Centre in 2014 as a Facility Attendant and has since worn many hats to help improve operations. Working with the Guest Services department during his time at university, he gained front line experience as well as leadership experience in his role as a Shift Lead and Supervisor. He also gained Human Resources He graduated from the University of Calgary in 2018 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, specializing in Human Resources, and currently works as the HR and Financial Coordinator at the Genesis Centre.
Sharon Evans President & Soccer Assoc. Rep
Sharon wears two hats on the Genesis Board. In addition to being the president she is also the soccer representative. She has been active in the soccer community from the grass roots level through to the provincial level and is still an active soccer player. Her educational background include an Electrical Engineering degree and a Masters of Business Administration both from the University of Calgary. Sharon strongly believes in giving back and the need for strong communities. Working with the board and staff allow her to use her leadership style of collaboration and innovation. Genesis is not a typical recreation centre, it is much more. As such there are no out of the box solutions making for a lot of innovation.
Tiffany Novotny Vice President
Tiffany is a life long Calgarian (born and raised) with over 16 years of work experience in environmental science, public administration, government policy and business management. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Calgary. She has two extremely active children that keep her and her husband running off their feet moving from one activity to the next. Together they enjoy skiing, biking, swimming, and hiking. Tiffany believes in supporting strong, healthy communities and is committed to ensuring Calgary and its communities are thriving for generations yet to come.
Thomas Hansen Treasurer
Thomas is a collaborative leader with over 30 years of private and public sector experience and believes that we can all learn from each other. Thomas has experience navigating complex, large-scale infrastructure projects that involved conflicting priorities, multi-level funding, political influence and positioning and volatile partnerships. He has had the opportunity to work on many different projects in a variety of roles including, Calgary’s Historic City Hall Restoration, Municipal Complex Truss Upgrade, Four new Regional Recreation Centres (Seton, Rocky Ridge, Great Plains, Quarry Park), New Central Library (Phase One), Calgary Soccer Centre, Rockyview General Hospital Renovation, The National Centre for Disease Control (Ottawa and Winnipeg) and Canary Warf in London, England. Over the last 7-years Thomas was accountable for the planning and delivery of over $3B of infrastructure. When he is not building, he is an avid traveller, buyer of vinyl, collector of guitars, lover of music, outdoor enthusiast, adventurer, backyard mechanic and renovator of old things. Thomas is a first generation Canadian and is proud to have been born, raised and educated in Calgary.
Yuvraj Singh Secretary
Yuvraj Singh is a 3rd-year Biological Sciences undergraduate student at the University of Calgary. He is a student researcher, avid community leader and mentor for high school students. As a senior executive of the TUXIS Youth Parliament of Alberta and community organizer, providing resources for the vulnerable and academic support for students are key aspects of his outreach. He does this through community projects working with law enforcement, government officials, humanitarian organizations and schools across the city.
Sukhvinder Malhotra Director-at-Large & Saddle Ridge CA. Rep
With a background in IT, Sukhvinder has been volunteering in the community through various roles since moving to Calgary from Ontario in 2007. He started building community connections by volunteering as a soccer coach for 4 years. He was involved with Khalsa School Calgary for 13 years since its opening in 2007, as Chairperson of the Parent Advisory Council and held various positions on the School Board for over 9 years, including the Board Chairperson. Sukhvinder has also been a part of the Nelson Mandela Parent Council and currently serves on the Saddle Ridge Community Association Board, as President of the Raven Ridge Condo Board and as a White Hat volunteer at Calgary Airport. He has a passion for giving back to the community in every way possible.
Syed Hussain Director-at-Large
With a Bachelor’s from Concordia University, Montreal and a strong business acumen, Syed Hussain has a passion to inspire change. He is employed with Air Canada as a Key Account Manager in Global Sales and is a proud founding member of GenYYC which is a new leadership development program designed through a collaborative partnership between the Calgary Chamber and the Calgary Foundation to support and encourage emerging young leaders in the city to build great leaders, great organizations and a great community. He is also the owner of Catalytic Arts which produces the most thrilling shows showcasing local emerging artists in the best of entertainment today while supporting different charities. Syed has travelled the world and has an inspired vision of the future. His experiences in life have been varied and dynamic, built on the principles of commitment, integrity and results.
Greg Steiner Director-at-Large
Greg is credited with the original vision for a recreational leisure centre on behalf of the northeast residents above McKnight Blvd. For 15 years he has worked tirelessly from the initial planning stages to the final opening of the new Genesis Centre of Community Wellness. Having served on the design, construction, and fund development committees, he continues to work towards accomplishing the overall vision and mandate of the Northeast Centre of Community Society (NECCS), of which he is a founding member. Having lived in Saddle Ridge for over 32 years, Greg has served in various executive capacities for Saddle Ridge Community Association, a founding partner of NECCS.
Harmeet Sandhu Director-at-Large
Harmeet is B.C. born, but a Calgarian at heart. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelors in Commerce - Accounting and currently is working towards obtaining her CPA Designation. The Northeast and its services have provided stability and a sense belonging for her and her family. She now wants to give back to the community that has provided her with so many opportunities. When not busy with work, she enjoys quality time with her family and friends, challenging herself with new hikes, travelling, and enjoys exploring the city and trying new foods.
Manroop Dhariwal Director-at-Large
Born and raised in Calgary, Manroop has always had a strong inclination for giving back to his community. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting undergraduate program at the Haskayne School of Business. Manroop has also successfully completed his CPA designation and currently has over 8 years of experience working in various roles in the energy industry. In his spare time, Manroop loves to engage in various physical activities. He enjoys soccer, basketball, exploring the outdoors and most importantly spending quality time with his family.
Stan Sandhu Director-at-Large
Stan completed a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science at the University of Calgary and went on to excel in senior positions as a Pricing Actuary for large corporations. His career success has stemmed from a combination of strong financial acumen and a natural ability to develop trusted relationships. In 2017, he joined the Ward 5 office as a Strategic Policy Advisor and became a voice for the North East community. Growing up in Saddle Ridge, Stan is intimately connected to the needs, dreams and challenges of the community. Stan is a changemaker. His purpose is to advocate for North East Calgarians to receive equitable access to stable jobs, foundational amenities, and growth-oriented programs.
Kimberly Karpenko Director-at-Large
Born in Manitoba, Kim moved to Calgary in 2014 and fell in love with the city. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s of Business Administration (Finance) from the University of Calgary. She has over 13 years of work experience in financial planning and budgeting in a variety of industries including public health, utilities and insurance.
Volunteering and being a part of the community is important to Kim as it reminds her we are all part of something greater than ourselves. An avid gardener, Kim donates extra garden fresh produce to the Leftovers Foundation in Calgary as part of their Home Harvest program.
A believer that it is never too late to learn something new Kim took up skiing shortly after moving to Calgary. She began volunteering with CADS the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers teaching individuals with cognitive or physical impairments the joy of snow sports.
In her free time, Kim loves to garden, read, hike, ski, and cycle.
Rania Kabalan Director-at-Large
Born in Lebanon but raised in Calgary her whole life, Rania has spent the majority of her life interacting with the North East community. Rania has had the blessing to live in many places around the world but always came back to Calgary which she calls home. She has completed multiple certificate programs in both the health and education field while raising her three beautiful children. She dedicates much of her life to volunteering and giving back to her community locally and globally. Her volunteering experiences have provided her with strong leadership skills and a great work ethic. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and her cat.
Wes Hynd Director-at-Large & Martindale CA.Rep
Wes is a community-oriented leader who has spent the last 15 years in the non-profit and charitable organization sector, most recently as a local church pastor and Community Association board member (Martindale). He and his wife Nadine moved to Northeast Calgary a couple of years ago because they wanted to invest in the communities here by living life alongside their neighbours and looking for ways to contribute to their flourishing. They love playing with the kids on their street, hosting backyard fires and BBQ’s, and helping to create a safe and interconnected community. They are also currently in the process of adopting a child from Thailand. Previously, Wes worked at Calgary’s two universities with a student organization called Power to Change, providing opportunities for mentoring and dialogue about life’s deepest questions, and giving direction to overseas mission trips and partnerships in Latin America. He holds a Bachelor of Journalism (Carleton University, Ottawa) and a Master of Divinity (Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando), and loves soccer, music, philosophy, and learning languages!
Reporting to the Active Living Manager, Booking Coordinator works with the Bookings Department and is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to both existing and prospective special event, sport, and other facility user groups. The incumbent will also assist in establishing booking systems/processes, building external relationships, revenue tracking and analysis, marketing, and communications, while fulfilling a leadership role with front line staff during special events.

Reporting to the Manager Facility and Program Operations, this position is responsible for ensuring that the recreational rental space within the NECCS component of the Genesis Centre as well as the office space is cleaned and maintained. The Custodian will also perform a variety of hands on work such as equipment set up and take down, minor repairs, posting signage and acting as a first responder. The position also includes maintenance of the exterior landscaping of the facility.
