Hockey marathon for the kids
Stan Sandhu is taking two of his passions – community and sports – to the next level.
Stan, who sits on the board of The Genesis Centre and has long been active in youth sports, including basketball, soccer and ice hockey, will join others for Hockey Marathon for the Kids, a gruelling test of endurance that aims to set the new Guinness World Record for the longest hockey game ever played. It takes place at the Chestermere Recreation Centre from April 5-16 and will raise funds to help children with cancer.
“This community has given me so many opportunities over the years, and I want to give back,” said Stan, who also has a 18-month-old son. “Our kids deserve nothing less than the very best, and that’s what the Alberta Children’s Hospital and this game represent. This is an opportunity to raise funds that will help kids with cancer access the very best treatments available, and I am grateful for this opportunity.”
All money raised by players like Stan will support a program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital that will double the number of clinical trials that kids with cancer can participate in here in Calgary. This means more kids will benefit from the very latest advancements, without having to travel elsewhere.
To do this, Sandhu and 39 other players will hit the ice for 262 hours (about 1 and a half weeks) of non-stop hockey. They will live inside the rec centre and skate in shifts, so some players can catch a few winks while their teammates take the ice.
“I’m looking forward to that comradery, all of us working towards a common goal,” he says. “It’s going to be a great challenge, but 12 days of our lives is nothing if it can make a difference for these kids and families.”
