Remembrance Day Field of Crosses Memorial

Field of poppies.

Calgary’s Field of Crosses Memorial, a poignant and solemn tribute, graces the city’s landscape annually, reminding all who pass by of the sacrifices made by Canada’s brave soldiers. This powerful display is the inspiration of Calgary businessman and philanthropist, Murray McCann. It blankets the Memorial Drive area with over 3,500 white crosses each November.

The memorial goes beyond mere symbolism. Each cross is adorned details of an individual soldier, transforming the stark rows into a sea of personal stories and sacrifices. The annual assembly of these crosses, carried out by dedicated volunteers, is a labor of love and respect for the fallen.

From November 1-11, the memorial offers a serene and reflective atmosphere. Visitors from all walks of life come to pay their respects, remember the past, and reflect on the ongoing importance of peace.

The Field of Crosses has become a symbol of unity, drawing in volunteers, organizations, and schools to participate in its setup and maintenance. This collective effort speaks to the memorial’s profound impact, extending far beyond its physical presence. It is a living tribute, fostering a deep sense of community and gratitude among the people of Calgary.
